So at last the defence secretary says he takes full responsibility, for decisions which lead to one of the most humiliating moments for our armed forces in recent times – the decision to allow the sailors and marines held by the Iranians to sell their stories to the media. Des Browne, has said that “ultimately the buck stops here”. Timing is everything in politics, so there’s no great surprise that this admission comes a week or so away from a government reshuffle. If only he had been forced to admit this at the time of this sorry saga – he may have quite literally been forced to walk the plank and resign.

A report by Chatham House has today warned that Iraq is on the brink of breaking up and that the country faces a future of multifaceted violent – in short Iraq is descending into civil war. No wonder then that Prince Harry’s orders to stay at home reminds us all about the dangers faced by our troops day in day out. Like many others who join the armed forces, Prince Harry clearly has a strong sense of duty to his country. I just hope that the decision for him not to serve in Iraq does not prevent him from having a fulfilling army career.
