Tomorrow, the European Union’s Heads of State and Government meet to negotiate a treaty of fundamental importance to the EU’s future. The European constitution, has reared its ugly head and is being revised. So having watched part of the European Affairs debate in the Commons this afternoon, I was surprised by low numbers of MPs who bothered to turn up and discuss this major issue, although this is a direct reference to the Labour side as the Conservative side was out in full force. Labour Back Benchers clearly fail to recognise the significance of a European constitution and the implication of power being transferred from Parliament to Europe. It goes without saying that the Shadow Foreign Secretary gave a resounding performance against a somewhat woolly Margaret Becket, but the real shocker for me was the government’s overall attitude and indifference to wanting to stand up for Britain’s interests in Europe and say ‘no’ to signing away our own constitutional soul to the EU. If the Government accept parts of the original constitution under another guise, we will be forced into an integrated European state. Think about it. For some in Europe, this has been their desired aim, but as for the people of Britain, well that’s another issue. Which is why I am astonished that such a populist government has failed to recognise that by standing up for Britain’s interests in Europe and by saying ‘no’ to the constitution and all it brings, could potentially be a massive feather in the cap of the government and a good start for Brown. Instead, it looks as if the people of Britain will be presented with some kind of backroom deal. No doubt spun by Blair as a victory for Britain, with all the details buried under the weight of regulatory measures that will soon be sent our way . The question is, will the great ‘clunking fist’ show that he is made of tougher stuff and veto any future transfer of powers? Let the battle begin…….

Talk about embarrassment the morning after the night before. No this is not a direct reference to my Saturday night out, but the utter humiliation the UK faced again in the 2007 Eurovision song contest.I deliberately did not watch the show as I knew it would prompt me to unleash a torrent of Euro sceptic babble about the merits of a learner, meaner Europe. However, following yet another abysmal result for us Brit’s am I the only person in the country wondering why we the British continue to pour large sums of money into supporting this Euro trash? Perhaps another item to be added to the Conservative list of European reform?!
