Buying or selling a home is a big deal in every sense of the word. Having just bought a home in Witham, I was pretty cross with the process, the paper work and the length of time it actually took to complete the purchase – around four months in my case and I wasn’t even selling! Which is why I am miffed by the government’s determination to make the process of even more painful. The Home Information Packs have received much criticism (down to government incompetence over its handling) from a range of groups including one group of professionals who clearly know a thing or two about property – Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The RICS have bluntly said that the packs would make it more expensive and more difficult for people to put their homes on the market, as well as being less “green” than they could be.
Rather strangely the Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper, has dismissed these comments and justified the packs for their energy performance certificate component. Now I’m all for providing information about saving money on fuel bills and energy efficiency, but to use the threat of climate change as justification for the introduction of such a botched policy smacks of desperation and will only add to the stress of selling a home.
