Today I have been driven to my blog by two great men of Essex. One is already well known and the other is a true star in the making. No I am not referring to our new Director of Communications, Andy Coulson (a man of Essex pedigree) – although Andy welcome to the Conservative Party.
The first is our top Essex cricketer Alastair Cook who once again dominated day three of the Test Match at Old Trafford with an inspirational performance against the West Indies. Not only that Cook (a mere youngster) has joined an exclusive club of players to reach six Test centuries before his 23rd birthday. Not only is he a star, but it is great to see our national team back on top form once again.
The other Essex star in the making is none other than Lee Mead, the man who could be Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new West End musical. Now I’m not a great fan of reality telly and I’ve been a late comer to this particular show, however, I have been overwhelmed not just by the talent and ability of the various contenders for the role of Joseph (they have all been great), but also by the sheer pressure they put themselves under to get through to the next stages of the show. The concentration of talent in a show like this is incredible. Good luck to the finalists and I am sure that Essex has its own West End star in the making.

I had an incredibly fulfilling day in the constituency today, essentially meeting with local organisations and getting involved in local issues.I was fortunate enough to have been invited to a site visit at the Powers Hall Infant Schools in Witham, where there are plans for a proposed children’s centre on the school site. Exciting as this project sounds, the purpose of my visit was to gauge views on the development and to find out about the local concerns surrounding the development – off which there are a few. As the prospective candidate I’ve make it my business to be as accessible as possible to local residents and organisations, as well as listening to and supporting all the communities across the Witham constituency in every possible way.
Which is why, I find today’s news about MP’s opting out of the Freedom of Information Act hugely ironic, as surely the lack of openness and transparency in British politics is exactly why politicians and political parties are so distrusted?
